India has recognized this emerging threat vector and is establishing dedicated Cyber Command for surveillance and both offensive and defensive capabilities. The newly formed Defence Cyber Agency will train a specialized cyber warfare workforce as India faces myriad challenges from state and non-state actors online. DRDO led initiatives are developing software defined radios, intrusion prevention tools, cryptographic solutions for secure communications and attribution techniques. Commercial IT companies are also partnering with armed forces to harden critical infrastructure against cyber-attacks. As hacks and malware become deadlier, establishing credible cyber deterrence will be vital for nations.
Nuclear Triad and Missile Defense Shield
To maintain a credible minimum nuclear deterrent, India is modernizing its strategic weapons through the vision of a nuclear triad comprising land, air and sea-based weapons. The INS Arihant SSBN allows nuclear missiles to be launched from submarines ensuring survivability of retaliatory capability. Additionally, the DRDO is developing a 5000km range intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple warheads - the Agni-V. The Light Combat Aircraft TEJAS has been made nuclear capable as well for an air leg of the triad. Regarding missile defense, India has deployed the long range Prithvi Air Defense missile and is enhancing network-centric capabilities through integration of radars, command posts andinterceptors like the Advanced Air Defense gun.
